Text (.txt) Files in Canvas

It is not possible to download text files (.txt) that have been added to Canvas sites; information technology is only possible to view a text file in the certificate previewer. Other standard file types like .md, .docx, .pdf, .ppt, and .pptx tin exist downloaded from Sail by clicking on a blue file link, but text files cannot be downloaded. For this reason, nosotros do not recommend adding text files to Sheet.

Periods (.) in "Restrict File Upload" List

Canvas won't let students submit file-upload online assignments if at that place is a period (.) for an extension in the listing of accepted file-types in the "Restrict File Upload" field. To stop this from happening, you must listing files extensions without periods–doc, docx, pdf, etc. and non .doc, .docx, and .pdf.

Mime Blazon Effect in Firefox

In that location is Firefox-specific bug that tin can affect mime types for files. Older versions of Firefox tin sometimes produce a mime-blazon error when uploading files to a website. When this happens for files uploaded to Sheet, the file does not render correctly in the Canvass previewer because the browser interprets information technology as another file blazon; consequently, users either come across  a string of code in the previewer or do not see the magnifying-glass icon for previewing the file at all. Fortunately, this bug does not affect users' ability to download files, just the power to preview them, so anyone with access to a file in a Canvas site tin can download information technology by clicking on the file link even when the file preview is not working.

To fix this issue, yous can exercise the following:

1. Check to run across that you lot are using a supported browser version. Whether you lot are using Firefox or another type of browser, please annotation that you should always use a version of a browser that Canvas supports to avoid issues affecting older versions. Please consult this list to see the browser versions Canvas currently supports:

Lost SpeedGrader Comments in Firefox

Nosotros take learned about a new Firefox problems affecting SpeedGrader. When a Instructor, TA, or Grader uses the margin commenting characteristic for annotations in SpeedGrader with Firefox, they must click outside of the comment bubble on another expanse of the document in lodge for the comment to be saved. This has led to several cases where final comments are not existence saved when the user navigates to the adjacent student submission.

We recommend the following workaround for this issue:

  • Use a supported version of Google Chrome or Safari instead of Firefox.
  • If you must use Firefox with SpeedGrader, make sure to click out of the comment bubble onto another area of the screen when adding your terminal comment on a paper to ensure that information technology is existence saved earlier navigating to the side by side student submission.

Also, please note that if y'all exit SpeedGrader open up for a submission for a long time, y'all can also lose comments, even when working in supported browsers. While information technology might seem that this behavior is the same as the Firefox problems, delight exist assured that it isn't. Rather, it is the intended behavior of SpeedGrader when it has been open for a submission for an extended period of fourth dimension.

Timeout Bug in SpeedGrader

SpeedGrader has a session timeout of 60 minutes. When a Teacher, TA, or Grader opens a document in SpeedGrader, Canvas volition save all annotations for the next 60 minutes. Afterwards fifty minutes have passed a pop-upwardly alert appears with instructions on how to restart your session to ensure boosted edits are saved.

SpeedGrader timeout messageFailing to restart your session may event in lost annotations so we recommend adhering to the warning to ensure all feedback is saved.

Video Comment in Peer Review Marked "Incomplete"

Video comments submitted for a peer review are marked "incomplete" if they don't have accompanying text. To avoid this issue, students should add text to their video-comment submission for peer reviews (e.1000., "This is my submission").

TIFF Files Not Supported in Canvas

Canvas does not support TIFF files. For this reason, it is recommended that JPEG and PNG file types be used in Canvas, as about browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE, etc.) and Canvas back up these file types.

Grading History Not Displaying All Form Changes

The Canvas grading history for a pupil's assignment grade only shows the 2 most recent grade changes in the last 24-hour flow. Whatsoever additional changes made in this menstruation are not saved.

Can't Bulletin Students in "Concluded" Courses in Canvas

Red X over

Although the messaging option for "Concluded" courses (meaning, courses from by terms that be in a read-just state) appears in the Canvas message-form, information technology isn't possible to send messages to students in "Concluded" courses because these courses are no longer active, and students tin can only access them in a read-but country. If y'all intend to stay in-touch with students from a grade later the term ends, nosotros recommend request if they would like to exchange e-mail addresses.

Teachers and TAs in "Ended" courses tin can bulletin one another using the "Concluded" messaging option.

No E-mail Notifications for Courses in Future Terms, Just Push Notifications

Users do not receive email notifications for actions taken in courses in future terms. For example, if y'all are a student in a grade that is fix upwards in Sail for Fall 2020, and information technology is currently Summer 2020, y'all will not receive email notifications if your instructor takes an activeness (due east.g., creates an consignment). This upshot occurs fifty-fifty for courses that are currently agile merely are technically associated with a future term (e.g., a Fall 2020 form that actually starts in Summer 2020). Users do receive button notifications for these type of deportment, however. To acquire more about push notifications, please run into "Ready Push Notifications"on this folio (instructor information and student information). Our vendor is working on a solution for this issue, and any updates on information technology will be posted hither.

No Quiz Statistics for Archetype Quizzes with More 100 Questions or 1,000 Attempts

Quiz statistics aren't available for Classic Quizzes with more than 100 questions or i,000 attempts (i.e., more than ane,000 quiz submissions from students for a single quiz). When you click on the Quiz Statistics link for a quiz that exceeds these maximum values for questions or attempts, the following bulletin appears:

" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/infocanvas.upenn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sadpanda.png?fit=300%2C158&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/infocanvas.upenn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sadpanda.png?fit=660%2C348&ssl=1" loading="lazy" width="660" height="348" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3919" src="https://penncanvas.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/sadpanda.png?w=558&resize=660%2C348" alt="Cartoon panda crying and the message, " data-recalc-dims="1" data-lazy-src="https://penncanvas.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/sadpanda.png?w=558&is-pending-load=1#038;resize=660%2C348" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7">

Please consult the "Canvas Quiz Detail Analysis" document for more than information on the benefits and limitations of Canvas quiz statistics.

As a workaround, you can view quiz statistics past downloading the CSV files in the Student Analysis and Item Analysis links. Y'all can so upload the file to Excel, Google Sheets, or some other spreadsheet and view the data in a much more convenient format.

"Session Expired" Bulletin When Viewing a Public Canvas Site

A "session expired" message and a log-in prompt appear afterwards several minutes of viewing the public version of a Canvas site either for users whose login data has been saved in Canvas from a prior session or for users who are logged into Sail in another browser window.

There are 2 possible solutions for this consequence:

1. Log out of Canvass and clear your browser's cache before accessing the public version of a Canvas site. Here are instructions for how to clear your browser's cache:

Clearing your cache on a PC

Clearing your cache on a Mac

2. Use Google Chrome's "Incognito" manner if you want to remain logged into Sail while viewing the public version of a Canvas site (more information on Google Chrome's "Incognito" mode).

Since this effect only affects users who have access to a Canvas instance, anyone outside the Academy of Pennsylvania who is not associated with a Canvas instance should non experience this issue. If a public version of a Canvas site is accessed past someone at another institution that has a Canvas example, they should follow either of the in a higher place suggestions to avert seeing the time-out message and log-in prompt.

Points Brandish for Ungraded Surveys in Modules

Users have reported experiencing an intermittent issue affecting ungraded surveys added to modules. When this result occurs, a betoken-value (due east.m., "1 pts") displays in the module listing for an ungraded survey that has been added to a module. Our vendor has confirmed that this issue only affects how ungraded surveys brandish in modules and has verified that ungraded surveys that this issue affects do not count toward the full grade grade. Our vendor'south engineers are working on a resolution for this issue, and an update will be posted to this "Known Bug" entry when the upshot is resolved.

50-User Limit for Collaborations

A maximum of 50 users can be added to a Collaborations Google Doc in Canvas. If there are more than l users enrolled in the grade site, the Collaborations tool will display only the first 50 users alphabetically.

Hanging Indentations in DocViewer

There is an actress wagon return to the formatting for hanging indentations for documents displayed in the DocViewer that utilise unsupported fonts. This misformatting just affects how a certificate displays in the DocViwer and does not affect the file itself; when downloaded, the file displays the correct formatting. Our vendor is working on a fix for this issue, and an update volition be posted to this "Known Bug" entry when information technology is resolved.

Gradebook-Consign Name-Sorting Outcome

When you consign the Canvass gradebook, sort the export by whatsoever column other than the "Student" cavalcade (for instance: the "Last Score" column), and the re-sort the export by the "Student" column, the 2d sort re-orders the rows alphabetically past students' beginning names instead of by their last names. When a gradebook is exported, the file is sorted alphabetically by last name, so a re-sort of the "Student" column later some other column has been sorted does non restore the file to the original sorting order. Our vendor is currently working on a solution for this outcome. An update will exist posted to this "Known Issues" entry when a solution has been implemented.

Mail Concluding Grades for Muted Moderated Assignments before Unmuting

If a moderated consignment has been unmuted before a moderator posts final grades for the assignment, Sail generates a notification that the assignment has been unmuted, but the grades and feedback on the assignment are still unavailable to students because the final grades take not be posted. For this reason, it is recommended that last grades for muted moderated assignments be posted before they are unmuted so that the notifications students receive about the assignment being unmuted will accurately reflect the availability of the assignment's grades and feedback.

"i" Character Non Displaying in Document Previews (Chrome 64)

If a box icon appears in place of an "i" character when previewing a certificate in Canvas through Chrome 64, and then Chrome 64 does not support this character in the font being used. Our vendor has confirmed that this issue should be resolved in a future Chrome release, but, until then, if you encounter this issue, the following workarounds are recommended:

    • Download the document.
    • Preview the document  in Canvas using a supported version of whatever browser other than Chrome 64. Delight consult this listing of browser versions that Canvas supports.

Some Special Characters Count as Words in the Rich Content Editor

These symbols each count as a word in Sail'due south Rich Content Editor:

`  ~ $ ^ = + > <

If you are an instructor or TA, it is recommended that y'all take this brake into consideration if yous are asking students to follow a discussion-count limit. If students volition need to use these symbols, please factor the approximately number of instances a student might need to use these symbols for the following types of activities:

  • Text-entry assignment submissions
  • Discussion posts
  • Essay questions for Sheet quizzes
  • Pages that students tin edit

If you are a pupil, delight take this restriction into consideration if you have been given a discussion-count limit for:

  • Text-entry assignment submissions
  • Word posts
  • Essay questions for Canvas quizzes
  • Pages that students tin edit

"Export Failure" for Duplicate File Names

When a Canvas site contains files with the same proper name, an "export failure" occurs for course content exports. To fix this result, a Teacher, TA, or Designer will need to delete duplicate files, or, for different files with the same name, they will need to rename all files except one.
